I was born in Oklahoma City in 1948. We were somewhat poor, but I didn’t know it. I had Polio when I was about five years old. I was one of the lucky ones to survive it without damage. I have two sisters younger than I. One of my sisters, Diana, was killed in the bombing of the Oklahoma City federal building. I’ll probably talk about this in more detail in another place.

My life as a child was pretty exciting. I saw a movie once that reminded me of my childhood. It was called The Sand Lot. We were about twenty kids all around the same age growing up in the same neighborhood. This called for a lot of excitement and a lot of adventure. My family was not a church going group. I grew up with all the vices kids have when they are unchurched. As I got older they were--alcohol, drugs, and sex.

When I got older, I worked in a bar and sold drugs. This was a terrible time of my life. As I look back upon it, I am so thankful to God that he rescued me out of the loneliness and sadness (darkness) I was experiencing. I became a Christian at the age of twenty-two.  Though I was attending the University of Central Oklahoma, I decided I wanted to learn the Bible in-depth, so I left it and traveled to Lubbock, Texas to attend the Sunset International Bible Institute. It is a two year program of intensive Bible education. It was there that I met my wife, Rebecca Miller.

Becky and I got married July 13th (Friday), 1973. In our first year of marriage, Becky and I joined a team of Sunset students and teachers going to Southern India to evaluate preachers who had been trained in the School of Preaching there (Sunset was taking responsibility for that school and wanted to know the state of those who had been trained). Going there caused Becky and I to decide that we both wanted to be missionaries. We decided to go to Athens, Greece to do mission work.

We chose Athens because Becky’s family had worked there as missionaries in 1964. Becky knew the language (somewhat) and had a fond affection for the Greeks. We left for Athens around December of 1975. Before leaving we had our first child. Allison was born in September of 1975. What were we thinking---taking a three month old baby oversees? We stayed in Athens for a little over nine years. While there we had our second child, Sarah, in 1980. We returned home to Oklahoma City in 1984. I took a job preaching there for the Northwest Church of Christ, where I am at the writing of this in 2008. We had our third child, Aaron, in 1985. I am fluent in the Greek language and enjoy returning to Athens each year to preach and teach.

While in Greece, we had the opportunity  to travel extensively throughout Europe and the Middle East. Some of these travels I hope to share elsewhere on this web site.
